Feed video, Reel, IGTV — what is the difference?
Instagram has merged most of its video formats under a single ranking system, but the upload formats themselves still differ. A Reel is a 9:16 vertical short-form video that lives in the dedicated Reels tab and the main Reels feed. A feed video is anything posted to the main grid in 16:9, 4:5 or 1:1 — usually three minutes or under, sometimes longer. IGTVwas Instagram's long-form silo that was folded into the main feed in 2022; legacy IGTV uploads still play through the normal video player.
This downloader handles every format except the Reel-specific 9:16 case — for that, head to the Reels downloader. The split is not technical (the underlying MP4 fetch is similar); it is a UX call so creators can land on the right page from the right keyword and get terminology that matches what they actually posted.
How Instapdown handles the file
Instapdown is a URL transformer, not a video host. Your browser resolves the paste into a scontent.cdninstagram.com MP4 URL via our API, then downloads the bytes directly from Instagram's CDN. We never store the file. We never re-encode it. We never strip metadata. The MP4 you save is the exact ingested copy Instagram serves to its own app — same bitrate, same audio track, same container.
That architecture matters for two reasons. First, file quality stays lossless. Second, it keeps the tool legally clean — pointing a browser at a public CDN URL is materially different from rehosting copyrighted content, and it is the same pattern every long-running Instagram downloader uses. Private accounts, paid subscription posts and login-walled content all return a graceful error; we explicitly do not bypass Instagram's access controls.

What we will not do
Some downloaders advertise features we explicitly refuse to ship: scraping private-account videos, harvesting subscription-only paid posts, batch-stealing entire creator profiles, or downloading content from accounts that have blocked you. Instapdown does none of that. Public profile, public video, fair use, attribution. That is the contract.

How do I download an Instagram video without a watermark?+
Open the video post in the Instagram app, tap the three-dot menu and choose Copy Link. Paste the URL into Instapdown's input box and click Download Video. The original MP4 is fetched directly from Instagram's CDN with no watermark, no overlay and no re-encode — exactly what the creator uploaded.
What is the difference between this tool and the Reels downloader?+
The Reels downloader targets 9:16 short-form vertical videos specifically. This tool handles every other public video format on Instagram — 16:9 horizontal feed videos, 4:5 portrait feed videos, square 1:1 posts and legacy IGTV long-form uploads. Use whichever matches the post type you have.
Does Instapdown support IGTV-style long-form videos?+
Yes. Instagram folded IGTV into the main feed in 2022, but those long-form uploads (over 10 minutes) still exist on profiles that posted them. Instapdown downloads them the same way as short feed videos — paste the post URL and you get the full MP4 in its original duration and quality.
What resolution will I get?+
Instapdown returns whatever the creator originally uploaded. Most modern uploads land at 1080p, some older posts at 720p, and the rare 4K post stays at 4K. We do not transcode, do not downscale and do not strip the audio track — the file is byte-for-byte identical to the Instagram source.
Can I download Instagram videos on my iPhone?+
Yes. Open Safari (or any iOS browser), navigate to instapdown.com, paste the Instagram video URL and tap Download Video. Safari saves the MP4 to the Files app under Downloads. To move it to Photos, open Files → long-press the MP4 → Share → Save Video. No app install required.
Does it work for private accounts?+
No. Instapdown only supports content from public Instagram profiles, by design. We do not bypass private-account permissions, login walls, or friend-only restrictions. If you need a video from a private account, ask the account owner to share or save it for you directly through Instagram.
Why is the file sometimes a few megabytes smaller than I expected?+
Instagram itself re-encodes most uploads on ingest — what you see in the app is already a transcoded version of the creator's source file. Instapdown returns that ingested file, which is what every other reader of the public CDN sees too. We do not add a second compression pass on top.
Is downloading Instagram videos legal?+
You may freely download videos you own or have explicit permission to use. Personal archival, fair-use commentary and backup are generally fine; reuploading another creator's video without credit is not. Always credit the original creator.
